A marine engine installed on a ship constructed on or after the following dates and operating in an NOx Emission Control Area shall comply with the Tier III NOx standards defined by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as follows*:
All other marine engines installed on ships constructed on or after 1st January 2016 shall comply with the Tier II NOx standards defined by the IMO.
*There are three exceptions to this: recreational vessels <24m, propulsion <750kW and recreational ships prior 1st January 2021 <500GT & >24m
